The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) approached Continental Mapping to perform terrestrial lidar processing for several pairs of bridges in Monroe County, WI.

WisDOT surveyors used a Riegl terrestrial scanner to collect multiple bridge scans in Monroe County, WI. Continental Mapping examined the data and worked closely with the WisDOT to establish standard deliverables with the client. Continental Mapping then calibrated multiple lidar point clouds, created bare earth models, and developed a DTM to create vector features and linework. Continental Mapping provided clearance measurements for each bridge along beams, paintlines, and crown of road, as well as the bridge deck.

This project is a great example of how terrestrial lidar acquisition can be applied in the transportation field. For smaller projects that require 360 degree scans of the project area, terrestrial lidar acquisition can be a faster and cheaper alternative. Deliverables included raw point cloud, bare earth model, DTM data, planimetric CAD features, as well as separate files containing measurements for bridge clearances and bridge deck. All data was delivered in 3D Microstation V8 DGN format.
